The western side of the Serra has been known since ancient times as a place rich in gold. Geologically it’s a moraine hill, the most beautiful and impressive in Europe. It was formed during the glaciations by the huge Balteo glacier that not only created this landscape but also transported gold from the gold veins of the south side of Monte Rosa massif. That’s why the Romans exploited these gold mines. Bessa is therefore a huge gold mine, active for more than a century, when several tonnes of the precious mineral have probably been extracted. In this fascinating territory we will try the experience of active panning for gold. During the day there will be a tasting of apple juice and apple mustard, produced in the nearby farm ‘La Soleggiata’, accompanied by local cheese
